Osnabrück (ots) - Following the Berlin Administrative Court's ruling, SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch warned Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt against continuing to implement blanket border rejections of asylum seekers. "Ultimately, the dispute could be fought out until a final decision is reached by the European Court of Justice," Miersch said in an interview with the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" (NOZ). "That could take a very long time and would be a major burden for the federal government. I would therefore ask Mr. Merz and Mr. Dobrindt to resolve the legal uncertainty now."

The Administrative Court ruled earlier this week that blanket rejections were unlawful in certain cases. Miersch spoke in the "NOZ" newspaper of the court's "very fundamental" assessment of the situation. "I expect further such rulings if the Interior Minister does not adjust this practice," said the SPD parliamentary group leader. The federal government must therefore "swiftly coordinate the next steps, because this legal uncertainty must not be borne by police officers."
